There Their They’re

There, Their, They’re

This week’s blog post is all about the use of ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

These three words are often confused and used incorrectly so let’s take a look at some explanations and examples;

‘There’ refers to a place
, for example “Look at that unusual building over there.”

‘Their’ is used to indicate possession, for example “Their new car looks fantastic”.

‘They’re’ is a contraction of two words; ‘they’ and ‘are’, for example “They’re coming over for dinner at 8 o’clock”.

Hopefully that’s made things a little bit clearer, here’s an easy way to remember how to use these.

There – contains ‘here’ so refers to a place

Their – contains ‘i’ to indicate possession

They’re – ask if your sentence still reads properly if you use ‘they are’, for example “They’re dogs are out of control” would be incorrect.
