Freelance Copywriting

1st June 2008

Well May was a busy old month. I had copywriting jobs for a number of new clients, big and small, local and international.

I’d like to say a big thank you to Jakub at Tarantula Web for all his help designing and developing a new speech writing site for me which is proving very successful despite being in its infancy.

My copywriting has taken a back seat in the last few weeks due to the birth of my first child. It was a truly incredible experience and I could write for weeks about it. However, I’ll be back to work as a copywriter as of tomorrow.

I’ve recently streamlined the number of services I’m offering. The most popular and enjoyable for me are web content, SEO copy and press releases so that’s what I’m concentrating on going forward.

Confessions of a copywriter……..

Sorry it’s nothing sordid I’m afraid! Lately I’ve been asked this a lot “So what does a copywriter do exactly?” Well, where better to provide the answer than my very own copywriting blog?

  • I come up with words than connect your product to your target customers
  • This helps to make them act on what they read and makes them more likely to buy
  • I don’t copy anything! copy is just a fancy word for err…….words!
  • I create ideas and concepts to help your business get results
  • I can help to ensure your website works hard for you so that you get a good return on your investment
  • I know very little about the other type of copyright - that’s legal mumbo jumbo!
  • I write, write and write again until every word sounds A-OK

So there you have it! That’s what this Scottish copywriter does most days. On my days off I write some more, usually speeches and short stories, talking of which it’s time this particular tale came to an end.

The plumber is coming to paint your house!

No, not really but it makes sense to get the right person for the job doesn’t it? If the exhaust fell off my car then I would of course take it to a mechanic.

So if you’ve spent a pretty sum on a website who do you want to write the content? a web designer? a mechanic? or maybe you think you can write it just fine yourself? Well, why not get a professional copywriter (me! not just any old copywriter!) to do it for you?

Why? well I know what people want and don’t want to read. I know how to use the right words to encourage people to act rather than clicking away in a few seconds. I also know you’re probably still unsure about whether or not you need a copywriter.

Let me put it this way, would you spend £1000 on a new piece of equipment and leave it to gather dust? No? well the same goes for your website. I can help you make it work, you’d like to increase your sales wouldn’t you?

Variety is the Spice of Life

It’s been a very good month so far and there’s an extra day of copywriting coming up next Friday! So far I’ve worked on a flyer for a Chinese restaurant, web copy for a dressmaking and alterations shop, a construction company website, one for a professional speech writer and quite a few more.

I’ve also had news about a novel I’ve written, and hopefully I’ll be able to post something very positive about that in the near future.

That’s all until March - if it comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb or some such nonsense.
